What is this?

The Palo Verde hub is Arizona desert power — the nuclear plant’s 500 kV switchyard west of Phoenix, a WECC node for the Southwest. Off-peak, the ICE index averages day-ahead prices at night, on Sundays and on NERC holidays: less air-conditioning, nuclear still on baseload, daytime solar already gone.

Southwest utilities hedge that trough here. This is not the peak block (Monday–Saturday, 6 a.m.–10 p.m. Pacific).

Pitfalls

  • Arizona power, not CA gas.
  • Off-peak ≠ peak (`palo-verde-da-peak`).
  • Not ISO-NE.
