What is this?

NYMEX RBOB is reformulated gasoline blendstock deliverable in New York Harbor — not pump gasoline. RBOB, Reformulated Blendstock for Oxygenate Blending, is an unleaded hydrocarbon, Colonial F-grade, meant to take about 10% denatured ethanol at the terminal. Ethanol corrodes pipelines, so the blendstock moves alone, from the Gulf on Colonial or from Northeast refineries.

Refiners and merchants hedge gallons that actually move through the port. US gasoline demand peaks in summer driving season. The summer vapor-pressure spec is not the winter one. Taking delivery requires a New York Harbor terminal; most positions are closed before then.

Pitfalls

  • RBOB = ethanol blendstock, not finished gasoline.
  • 42,000 gal = 1,000 barrels, same volume as CL.
  • ≠ Gulf Coast CBOB.
