What is this?

NY Harbor ULSD is ultra-low sulfur diesel deliverable at the port — the US on-road distillate, not residual fuel oil. The HO ticker and many texts still say heating oil: from the May 2013 contract, the spec has followed Colonial grade 62, under 15 ppm sulfur, with no biodiesel. The Northeast still heats with distillate; the same product fuels trucks and, in winter, homes. New York Harbor takes Gulf barrels on Colonial, local refineries and imports.

Refiners, merchants and heating distributors hedge gallons that move through the port. Heating demand peaks in winter. Taking delivery requires a New York Harbor terminal; most positions are closed before then.

Pitfalls

  • ULSD ≠ residual HSFO.
  • HO is still the ticker; spec is ULSD.
  • ≠ Gulf up-down spread.
