Exposure to a rise in deliverable NYMEX platinum.

What is this?

NYMEX platinum is the platinum-group metal delivered as cast plate or ingot, 99.95 percent pure, into approved vaults — New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Massachusetts. Autocatalysts are the largest use; jewellery and industry (glass, chemicals) make up the rest. South Africa supplies about 70 percent of mine output; Russia a smaller share. It is not palladium.

Miners and catalyst makers hedge a price or a stock; jewellers hedge the cost of metal. Funds take exposure without holding plate.

Pitfalls

  • Size is 50 oz (gold 100, palladium 100, silver 5,000).
  • NYMEX, not COMEX.
  • Auto-catalyst demand is not a separate COT category.
