What is this?

NYMEX palladium is not platinum. It is the other platinum-group metal, delivered as cast plate or ingot, 99.95 percent pure, into the same US vaults — New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Massachusetts. Demand goes mainly into gasoline autocatalysts; platinum leans more toward diesel, jewellery and industry. Russia is the leading mine producer of palladium; South Africa the second. A large share of metal also comes back from spent converters.

PGM miners and catalyst makers hedge a price or a stock.

Pitfalls

  • 100 oz like gold, not 50 oz like platinum.
  • Not a platinum proxy.
