What is this?

Polymer-grade propylene, PGP, is the high-purity monomer, around 99.5%, meant for polypropylene — fibers, bottle caps, auto parts — not RBOB gasoline. The calendar contract settles to the PetroChem Wire (PCW, OPIS) “PGP FOB MtB-EPC” average at Mont Belvieu, each business day of the month.

It comes from steam cracking or refining. Only this grade, purer than chemical-grade, feeds polypropylene. Petrochemical plants and plastics makers hedge the feedstock, not crude and not gasoline blendstock.

Pitfalls

  • Olefin, not RBOB.
  • PCW = Platts/PetroChem Wire, not CL.
  • Size unverified.
