Exposure to a rise in the USDA nonfat dry milk (NDM) price.

What is this?

A by-product of butter-making, NDM is storable nonfat dry milk, surveyed each week in the NDPSR (Extra Grade or Grade A, unfortified). The future settles to USDA’s monthly average of those sales. It is the nonfat-solids leg of Class IV, not the class price: Class IV milk combines powder and butter.

Powder plants and exporters use it: US dry skim products mostly go abroad, unlike butter or cheese. At expiry there are no bags.

Pitfalls

  • 44,000 lb, not 200,000.
  • ≠ Class III.
  • NDM ≠ butter.
