What is CME Live Cattle?

Live cattle

A long means…

Exposure to a rise in deliverable fed cattle — US steers and heifers ready for slaughter.

What is this?

Fed cattle are steers and heifers coming off the feedlot, ready for slaughter — not lighter feeders headed for the pen. After three to five months on a high-energy ration they typically weigh about 1,200 to 1,500 pounds, the weight at which the feedlot sells them to packers. The CME future delivers: the short tenders cattle born and raised in the United States, at par USDA Yield Grade 3, 70% Choice / 30% Select. The long chooses live grading at an approved stockyard, or carcass grading at a plant.

Feedlots hedge the sale price; packers hedge the cost of buying slaughter cattle.

Pitfalls

  • Physical delivery, not cash-settled.
  • ≠ feeder cattle.
  • 40,000 lb, cents/lb.
