Exposure to a rise in the CME Lean Hog Index — the US lean hog carcass price.

What is this?

Lean Hog is a carcass price, not live hogs on the hoof. A US hog goes to slaughter around 275 pounds; the carcass weighs about 200 pounds. It takes about six months for a pig to be market-ready. The CME Lean Hog Index, which the future settles to at expiry, is a two-day weighted average of packer purchases in USDA AMS’s national prior-day slaughtered-swine report: producer-sold slaughter hogs, negotiated or formula, on a lean-value basis. At expiry there are no hogs.

Producers and packers hedge US pork.

Pitfalls

  • Cash-settled index, not animal delivery.
  • ≠ live cattle.
  • Same 40,000 lb size as live cattle, different species.
