What is Coffee C (ICE US arabica)?

Exposure to a rise in deliverable washed green arabica (Coffee C) — not robusta.

What is this?

Coffee C is the world arabica price — the more aromatic, higher-grown species, not robusta. The contract delivers washed green beans from some twenty origins into licensed warehouses in the United States and Europe. Exchange graders inspect the bean and cup it for flavor: Colombia, Costa Rica and Kenya stand at a premium; Brazil at a discount. New York and Virginia are par; the US South and Europe deliver cheaper. Physical coffee pays around that price, plus or minus an origin differential.

Exporters and merchants hedge an arabica inventory; roasters hedge the cost of buying it.

Pitfalls

  • Coffee C = ICE US arabica, not London robusta.
  • Quoted in cents/lb, not USD/t.
  • Multiple origins with premiums — not a single-country contract.
