What is the US HRC steel futures contract?

US hot-rolled coil (HRC)

Satellite of High Grade Copper (Copper #1, COMEX)

A long means…

Exposure to a rise in the US Midwest hot-rolled coil index (CRU) — not European steel.

What is this?

Midwest hot-rolled coil is the first flat steel after the slab: feedstock for cold-rolled and galvanized sheet, autos and construction. The price tracked is not a coil delivery: it is CRU’s US Midwest index, the most-used US steel benchmark. CRU takes only the prior week’s spot transactions — not bids or offers, not opinions, not contract business. Commercial-quality prime, FOB mill east of the Rockies. Mills, service centres and manufacturers feed the index.

Steelmakers, service centres and manufacturers hedge the US hot-coil price here, distinct from North European coil.

Pitfalls

  • US HRC (CRU) ≠ North European HRC (Argus, EHR).
  • US short ton, not metric ton.
  • Cash index, not COMEX physical delivery.
