What is the Nikkei 225 (yen) futures contract?

Yen-denominated Nikkei 225 (CME)

A long means…

Exposure to a rise in the Nikkei 225 via the CME future whose P&L is in yen.

What is this?

The Nikkei 225 is the index of 225 Prime Market names on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, price-weighted: a higher-priced stock counts more than a cheaper one, even if its market cap is smaller. It is the Japanese equity benchmark. The CME future is used to hedge a Japanese portfolio, or to take a view on these 225 names, without buying the shares. At expiry there are no shares.

P&L is in yen: this is not the dollar-denominated Nikkei, and not the yen FX future. Both CME listings settle to the same special opening of the index in Tokyo; only the P&L currency differs.

Pitfalls

  • Yen-denominated (NIY, ¥500), not dollar Nikkei NKD.
  • Not yen FX futures (6J / japanese-yen).
  • CME CFTC line only: not Osaka, not SGX.
